چکیده

This paper proposes a method for interactive recognition of household objects using proprioceptive and auditory feedback. In our experiments, the robot observed the changes in its proprioceptive and auditory sensory streams while performing five exploratory behaviors (lift, shake, drop, crush, and push) on 50 common household objects (e.g., bottles, cups, balls, toys, etc.). The robot was tasked with recognizing the objects it was manipulating by feeling them and listening to the sounds that they make without using any visual information. The results show that both proprioception and audio, coupled with exploratory behaviors, can be used successfully for object recognition. Furthermore, the robot was able to integrate feedback from the two modalities, to achieve even better recognition accuracy. Finally, the results show that the robot can boost its recognition rate even further by applying multiple different exploratory behaviors on the object.

The Boosting Effect of Exploratory Behaviors

Active object exploration is one of the hallmarks of human and animal intelligence. Research in psychology has shown that the use of multiple exploratory behaviors is crucial for learning about objects. Inspired by such research, recent work in robotics has demonstrated that by performing multiple exploratory behaviors a robot can dramatically improve its object recognition rate. But what is th...

Interactive Object Recognition Using Proprioceptive Feedback

This paper proposes a method for interactive recognition of household objects by a robot using proprioceptive feedback. In our experiments, the robot observed the changes in its proprioceptive stream while performing five exploratory behaviors (lift, shake, drop, crush, and push) on 50 common household objects (e.g., bottles, cans, balls, toys, etc.). Specifically, the robot used its own joint ...

Two Experiments on the Perception of Slip at the Fingertip

This paper describes the results of two experiments that investigate relative motion between a surface and the fingertip (slip) as part of a larger program of research on “fingertip haptics.” The primary intent of both experiments is to evaluate the importance of relative motion with respect to perceiving surface velocity. The perception of surface velocity is crucial to dexterous control and o...

Friction Sounds for Sensorial Substitution

This paper explores the use of a physics-based sound model of continuous contact for auditory display in interactive settings. An audio-visual interactive display is developed in which the sound model is controlled by the user’s gestures. The display is used to investigate to what extent audition can substitute for haptic feedback in conveying perception of inertial properties of a manipulated ...

Auditory Proprioceptive Integration: Effects of Real-Time Kinematic Auditory Feedback on Knee Proprioception

The purpose of the study was to assess the influence of real-time auditory feedback on knee proprioception. Thirty healthy participants were randomly allocated to control (n = 15), and experimental group I (15). The participants performed an active knee-repositioning task using their dominant leg, with/without additional real-time auditory feedback where the frequency was mapped in a convergent...
